Abstrak (Berisi Bastraknya saja, Judul dan Nama Tidak Boleh di Masukan)
The materials which are not interesting led students to have low motivation to speak English in the class. Realia is an aid for teaching English. Students become more enthusiastic in learning process because realia helps students to make English lessons memorable by creating a link between the objects and the words or phrase they represent. This study aimed to know whether there was any significant effect on students’ speaking achievement after being taught by using realia. The research was conducted at XI IPS3 of SMAN 1 Seputih Raman as an experimental class that consisted of 28 students. This research applied quantitative design with once of pretest, three times of treatments, and once of posttest. Paired sample t-test was used to analyze the data and the hypothesis testing was calculated by using SPSS version 16.00 at the significant level of p<0.05. The result indicated that the increase of students’ speaking achievement had variation. Their scores increased significantly overall but, they did not increase acutely for each student in different level of speaking proficiency. These results supported the theory of Benavent (2011:89) who says that realia and authentic ii materials increase learners’ motivation but are difficult to adapt to the learners’ level of language, especially at the beginning level. The theory means that realia increases students’ motivation in learning first before it influences their speaking skill. English teachers are suggested to use realia as a teaching-learning media in increasing students’ motivation on speaking because they will be more interested in learning English. Realia digs students’ curiousity to explore the object directly in looking for some information by analyzing the object clearly without afraid of making mistakes in pronunciation or grammar.
