Abstrak (Berisi Bastraknya saja, Judul dan Nama Tidak Boleh di Masukan)

Speaking is one oral communication learned by the students of Senior High School where they are expected to speak well and be confident to speak up in front of the class. The problem is, most of the students in Senior High School especially in SMA Persada Bandar Lampung are not able to speak English well and they are not confident when they speak in front of the class. They feel afraid if they make mistakes in speaking, they do not know what to talk about. Their worry in speaking English make their speaking ability low. To overcome this problem, the writer gave a solution to improve their speaking ability by using debate. Debate is a technique which encourages students to speak and stimulates their confident when speaking in front of the class. Kurniasari (2000) states by using debate they get real life communication, opportunities to speak, they can feel relax and enjoyable, and they are challenge to accomplish and learn something through the language. This research was intended to investigate whether or not de speaking ability significantly. This research was a quantitative research. The research design was one group pretest posttest design. This research was conducted in six meetings at SMA Persada Bandar Lampung from November 16 2010. The sample was Science Class, class XII IPA 2 consisting of 34 students. th up to November 30 The data were collected through recording and then analyzed the difference score of pretest and posttest by using repeated T-Test to examine the significant increase of test results of show that there is a significant increase from pre test to post test after being taught by using debate ability increase because the researcher gave the explanation of debate clearly and the students had more chance to practice debate. The increase is from 48.5 up to 71.7, it means that the range increase of pretest to posttest is 23.2. In this research all aspects of speaking increase; pronunciation 9.6 up to 14.6, grammar 9.9 up to 14.6, vocabulary 9.9 up to 14.1, fluency 9.3 up to 13.7 and comprehension 10 up to 14.9. The result of the computation shows that the value of two tailed significance is 0.000. Since the Sign < th (0.000 < 0.05), the value indicates that the numbers represents the significance. It proves that the treatments given through debate technique has better effect on ability of speaking.
