Abstrak

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penambahan alumina terhadap karakteristik kekerasan, dan struktur cordierite. Silika diperoleh dari sekam padi melalui metode sol-gel sedangkan alumina dan magnesium oksida berasal dari Sigma-Aldrich. Cordierite disintesis melalui metode padatan dengan suhu sintering 1200oC. Hasil Pengukuran menunjukan bahwa penambahan alumina dapat meningkatkan nilai kekerasan, mengurangi densitas, dan meningkatkan porositas. Karakterisasi dengan X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) menunjukkan adanya struktur yang diperoleh, yaitu kristobalit, corundum, cordierite, spinel, dan periclase. Seiring meningkatnya komposisi alumina pada sampel, maka semakin meningkat pula nilai fraksi massa struktur corundum di dalam sampel. Kata kunci: Alumina, cordierite, kekerasan, sekam padi, struktur, dan X-Ray Diffraction. abstract This study was carried out to investigate the effect of alumina on hardness characteristics, and structure of cordierite. Silica obtained from rice husk through sol-gel method, while alumina and magnesium were obtained from Sigma- Aldrich. Cordierite was synthesized by the solid state method and sintered at 1200°C. The measurement results revealed that the addition of alumina on cordierite can increased both hardness and porosity, and decrease density. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) showed the existence of vased structures such as cristobalite, corundum, cordierite, spinel, and periclase. Along the increase of alumina content, hence increases also the mass fraction of corundum structure on sample. Keywords: Alumina, cordierite, hardness, rice husk, and X-Ray Diffraction.
