Abstrak

Terbentuknya kerak pada pipa merupakan masalah yang sering dijumpai pada industri diantaranya industri minyak, gas, dan industri yang melibatkan proses desalinasi dan ketel. Salah satu kerak yang banyak dijumpai yaitu kalsium karbonat (CaCO3). Untuk mengatasi masalah tersebut, pada penelitian ini digunakan asap cair tempurung kelapa grade 2 sebagai inhibitor kerak CaCO3 yang ramah lingkungan menggunakan metode tanpa penambahan bibit kristal (Unseeded Experiment) menggunakan suhu 90 oC. Larutan pertumbuhan CaCO3 yang digunakan yaitu 0,025; 0,038; 0,050; dan 0,063 M serta variasi inhibitor sebesar 50, 150, 250, dan 350 ppm. Nilai persen efektivitas tertinggi terjadi pada konsentrasi 0,025 M dengan penambahan inhibitor sebesar 350 ppm yaitu sebesar 99,48%. Berdasarkan hasil Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) dan X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) menunjukkan kerak CaCO3 tanpa inhibitor terdiri dari kristal fasa kalsit dan sedikit aragonit, sedangkan setelah penambahan inhibitor terdiri dari kristal fasa aragonit, vaterit, dan sedikit kalsit. Kalsit merupakan jenis kristal hardscale sedangkan aragonit dan vaterit merupakan jenis kristal softscale. Analisis kuantitatif menggunakan Particle Size Analyzer (PSA) menunjukan bahwa distribusi ukuran partikel kerak CaCO3 menjadi lebih kecil dengan adanya penambahan inhibitor berdasarkan nilai rata-rata (mean) yaitu dari 133,70 menjadi 8,26 µm dan nilai tengah (median) yaitu dari 44,51 menjadi 6,40 µm. Kata Kunci : Asap cair, CaCO3, inhibitor, kerak THE STUDY OF ADDITION OF COCONUT SHELL LIQUID SMOKE GRADE 2 AS AN INHIBITOR OF CALCIUM CARBONATE (CaCO3) SCALE USING UNSEEDED EXPERIMENT METHOD Scale formation on the pipes is a problem that is often encountered in industries such as oil, gas, and industries that involve desalination and kettle process. One of the many scales found is calcium carbonate (CaCO3). In order to solve the problem, in this research coconut shell liquid smoke was used as an environmentally friendly inhibitor of CaCO3 using unseeded experiment method at temperature of 90 oC. The growth solutions of CaCO3 used were 0.025, 0.038, 0.050, and 0.063 M with inhibitor variations of 50, 150, 250, and 350 ppm. The highest percentage of the effectiveness (99.48%) occurred in the concentration of 0.025 M with the addition of 350 ppm inhibitor. Based on the results of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) showed that the scale of CaCO3 without inhibitors consisted of calcite and slightly aragonite crystals, while after addition of inhibitors contained of aragonite, vaterite and slightly calcite phases. Calcite is a type of hard scale crystal while aragonite and vaterite are a type of soft scale crystals. Quantitative analysis using Particle Size Analyzer (PSA) showed that the particle size distribution of CaCO3 crystals was smaller with the addition of inhibitor based on mean value from 133.70 to 8.26 μm and median of 44.51 to 6.40 μm.
