Abstrak

The objectives of this research are to find out whether there is an improvement in students’ writing ability of descriptive text and what aspect of writing that improves the most after the students were taught by using authentic materials. This research is a quantitative research which used one group pre-test post-test design. The subjects of this research were 30 students of VIIIB class at SMPN 8 Bandar Lampung in academic year 2017 - 2018. In this research, the researcher administered five meetings. The beginning of the meeting, the researcher conducted the pre-test to find out the students’ initial ability in writing descriptive text. Then the researcher had three meetings of the treatments. At the end of the meeting, the researcher conducted the post-test to find out the students’ writing ability after having the treatment which used authentic materials. The data were analysed by using Paired Sample t-test in which the significance was determined by value <0.05. The research also finds that the most improved aspect of writing is the content aspect. The result of the research shows that there is an improvement in the students writing descriptive text. It can be seen from the increase of the mean score of the students result from the pre-test and the post-test, 17.91 point, from 50.99 to 68.9. It can be concluded that authentic materials give a positive effect in teaching writing especially writing descriptive text. Aspect of writing that improves the most is the content aspect. Thus, based on the result it can be said that authentic materials are good for teaching writing.
