Abstrak

Background: Acne vulgaris is a disease that has a high prevalence in adolescence. Treatment of acne vulgaris is important because this disease is chronic so that it can psychoemotional and social adaptation of patients. There have been many resistances in conventional therapy with acne vulgaris with the topical and systemic antimicrobials due to the widespread use of irrational antibiotics. Propolis is a mixture of natural resins produced by honey bees which have antibacterial properties. This study aims to determine the effect of giving propolis extract on the growth of Propionibacterium acnes in vitro. Method: This is an experimental study used the diffusion disc of Kirby-Bauer method. Propolis extract is divided into four concentration groups; 5%, 10%, 20% and 40%. Measuring the inhibition zone is carried out after 24 hours of incubation. Data were analyzed using One-way ANOVA and Bonferroni statistical tests. Results: The mean diameter of Propionibacterium acnes growth inhibition zone formed at concentrations of 5%, 10%, 20%, and 40% were 7.98 mm, 9.89 mm, 10.68 mm, and 12.21 mm, respectively, while there was relationship between between the concentration and diameter of the average zone of inhibition of bacterial growth (p<0.05). Conclusion: Propolis has the ability to inhibit the growth of Propionibacterium acnes bacteria without being affected by solvents (p<0.05). However, the inhibitory ability of propolis against Propionibacterium acnes cannot match the standard antibiotic, Clindamycin, even though the concentration of propolis extract is 40% (p<0.05). Pengukuran zona hambat dilakukan setelah inkubasi selama 24 jam.
