Abstrak

Vocabulary is emphasized as one of language aspects that is presented in the classroom during the process of language teaching. Enhancing the students’ vocabulary achievement is not an easy way for English teachers in teaching English in the classroom. Therefore, the teachers should find systematic ways of helping the students with vocabulary. One of the cooperative learning techniques supposed to be useful in teaching vocabulary is Modified Student Teams Achievement Divisions (MSTAD). The research was implemented to find out the significant difference in vocabulary achievement between students who are taught by using STAD and MSTAD technique, and also the students’ perceptions after being taught by using MSTAD technique. The design of the research was true experimental design with two groups taken randomly, one as the experimental group (32 students) and the other as the control group (30 students) at SMAN 3 Bandar Lampung. The instruments used were the vocabulary test, questionnaire and interview. The data were analyzed by using independent sample t-test in order to know the significant difference between control group and experimental group. The result revealed that t-value was higher than t-table with the significance level of less than 0,05 (3,112 > 1,671) (0.003 < 0,05). It means that there was a significant difference between students who are taught by using STAD and MSTAD technique. Moreover, the experimental group perceived positively toward MSTAD technique in order to enhance their vocabulary achievement.
