Abstrak

Reading is an interactive process between the reader and the writer. Theoretically, in teaching and learning English, reading is very complex because reading skills involve many aspects to be learned (e.g. identifying main idea, finding specific information, determining reference, understanding vocabulary, and making inference). In other word, reading is one of language skills that used to comprehend the text. The learners also have to connect the writer and the teacher. This research was aimed at finding out whether there is a significant improvement on students’ reading comprehension achievement after being taught through KWL technique, finding out the aspect which is improved the most after being taught through KWL technique. Thirty one students of SMP Kartika II-2 Bandar Lampung were selected as sample of this research. The researcher uses One Group Pre-test Post-test design. Then, the t-test was used to reach the significant value. The result showed that the students’ mean score of pre-test was 68.00 and their mean score of the post-test after being taught through KWL technique was in which their gain score was 80.00. Specifically, KWL technique improved the students’ reading comprehension achievement. Moreover, KWL technique mostly improved the students’ reading comprehension achievement in vocabulary. In addition, the students still faced some difficulties in answering the questions in English especially in reading comprehension. However, after practicing through KWL technique, the students gradually started to comprehend the materials and were able to overcome those problems.
