Abstrak

English foreign language learners especially my students in MTsN 1 Lampung Selatan have low capability in mastering the vocabulary and they get difficult to know the meaning of a lot of words. The objectives of this research were to investigate the difference of vocabulary achievement who were taught through mnemonic keyword technique and of those taught through word mapping, to reveal the difference in vocabulary achievement of the extrovert and the introvert students, and to find out the interaction between the teaching techniques and students’ personality on students’ vocabulary achievement. The research was an experimental research with factorial design 2x2. The population was 214 students from seven classes at the seventh year of MTsN I Lampung Selatan in academic year 2019/2020. The research took two classes in the school as the sample. In determining the sample, the class was selected randomly. The researcher used two classes as experimental class. The sample were VII B and VII C. The data were collected from the personality questionnaire to classify the extrovert and the introvert students, and vocabulary test analyzed by Independent Group T-test and two-way Anova . The results showed that (1) there was a significant difference between vocabulary achievement of students who were taught through mnemonic keyword technique and of those taught through word mapping. It could be seen from the significant value 0.000 that was lower than 0.05., (2) there was no difference between vocabulary achievement of the extrovert and the introvert students. It could be seen from the significant value 0.884 that was higher than 0.05, (3) there was an interaction among vocabulary achievement, mnemonic keyword technique and word mapping implemented toward the extrovert and the introvert students although it was not significant. It could be seen from the significant value of corrected model was 0.000 < 0.05 and the F value of the corrected model was 32.480. It was higher than F table = 3.93. It means the model is valid. Therefore, it can be concluded that there was an interaction among the variables. In other words, Both mnemonic keyword technique and word mapping can increase the students’ vocabulary achievement of the students with different personality. It can be said that word mapping is better than mnemonic keyword technique although there was no difference between vocabulary achievement of the extrovert and the introvert students.
