ABSTRACT OPTIMIZATION OF MACHINING PARAMETERS TO THE PRECISION OF TI-6Al-4V ELI CORTICAL THREAD GEOMETRY USING THE TAGUCHI METHOD L9 By Kurnia Agung Laksono In orthopedic surgery, an implant is a device that is placed as a bone to support fractures, which can be placed inside or outside the body. Titanium and its alloys are a type of material used in bone implants because they have good biocompatible properties and corrosion resistance. This study aims to find optimal conditions for cutting to the precision of cortical thread geometry. CNC machining is the type of machining chosen in this study and the material used is Ti-6Al-4v ELI. The machining parameters used are spindle rotation of 100, 200, and 300 rpm, while the Depth of Cut is 0.01, 0.02, and 0.03 mm, and the lubricants used are synthetic oil, virgin palm oil, and virgin coconut oil. The precision of thread geometry can be seen through the measurement of thread peak distance error, thread height error and thread angle error using profile projector. In this study, it was shown that the optimal cutting conditions were found in the spindle rotation parameters of 300 rpm, DOC of 0.01 mm and VCO type lubricants, resulting in thread peak distance errors and the smallest thread height errors of 0.002 mm and 0.006 mm. This is inversely proportional to the angular error value, the optimal cutting conditions are found in the spindle rotation parameters of 100 rpm and DOC of 0.01 mm with synthetic oil lubricant types, resulting in angular error values of both α and β values of 0.041° and 0.051°. Similarly, the best thread surface profile was obtained in the use of DOC 0.01 mm, the higher the DOC value, the more defects in the form of cutting residue on the thread surface.
