Abstrak
Speaking is one of the most important skill in communication because any expression of thought that comes from mind can be conveyed by speaking. Nowadays, although speaking has been taught from Elementary school to Senior High School, many students are still incapable of speaking in English well. This may be caused by the limitation of opportunity to practice it, students’ lack of vocabulary, or students’ psychological factors, i.e. feeling fear of making mistakes when speaking in English. One of the factors that make the students fail to learn English is due to their low of motivation. As it is known, motivation is one of the factors that can influence the students’ ability in learning language. The lower the motivation they have in expressing their ideas, the lower the chance to be succesful in learning a foreign language especially in speaking. This research is quantitative by nature. The design used in this research was expost-facto design. This was conducted at SMPN 19 Bandar Lampung in 2012-2013 academic year and the participant was one of the classes of the second year that was class VIII F consisting of 36 students. However there were two students who did not take part in the study, so the research participants were 34 students only. In collecting the data, the writer applied the questionnaire for measuring the students’ motivation and subjective test for speaking. Based on the result of this resarch, it is concluded that there is a significant correlation between students’ motivation and their English speaking ability. At the level of significance 0.01, the coefficient correlation is 0.873, it was categorized as high or strong correlation.
