The Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (BBSNP) is a key habitat for the roughneck monitor lizard (Varanus rudicolis), yet data on its distribution and habitat suitability remain limited. Classified as Data Deficient by the IUCN and listed in CITES Appendix II, the species lacks sufficient population and distribution data. This study, conducted in collaboration with WCS-IP and the BBSNP program, used MaxEnt modeling to analyze the distribution of the roughneck monitor lizard based on camera trap data. The model, which integrates coordinate data from lizard sightings and environmental variables, demonstrated good accuracy (AUC: 0.887). Results indicate that the species is most abundant in the central and southern parts of BBSNP. Key environmental factors influencing its distribution include distance to forest edge, distance to rivers, isothermality, vegetation index, slope, precipitation seasonality, precipitation of wettest month, and precipitation of coldest quarter. This study sheds light on the habitat preferences of the roughneck monitor lizard, providing crucial insights for future conservation efforts in BBSNP.
