Ali Usman 0543042079 %J Digital Library %T MOTIVATING STUDENTS IN SPEAKING CLASS THROUGH VISUAL MEDIA AT FIRST GRADE OF SMA N 1 LABUHAN RATU LAMPUNG TIMUR %X This research is intended to investigate the students? motivation in their speaking class and whether or not teaching speaking by using visual media improves students? motivation significantly. This research was quantitative research. The research design was one group pretest posttest design. This research was conducted at SMA N 1 Labuhan Ratu Lampung Timur in the school year 2009/2010 and the subject was one of the classes of the first grade that was class X3. The class consisted of 30 students. The data were collected by using closeended questionnaire. The questionnaire was used in order to investigate students? motivation in their speaking class. The data were analyzed by using Repeated Measures T-Test in SPSS 12 for Windows Program. The result of the score of students? motivation before and after the treatment implied that visual media could improve more the students? motivation in their speaking class. The computation of the data showed that the total score of the students? motivation before the treatment was 1573 with the mean score 52.43 and the total score of students? motivation after the treatment was 1904 with the mean score 63.47. The high score of students? motivation from 10% consisted of 3 students up to 66.66% consisted of 20, the medium score was from 83% consisted of 25 students up to 33.34% consisted of 10 students and the low score was from 6.66% consisted of 2 students up to 0% consisted of 0 students after the treatment. It means that students? motivation in their speaking class improved after they were taught by using visual media. The researcher concluded that there was significant improvement of students? motivation in their speaking class after they were taught by using visual media. At the level of significance 0.01, it was attained that t-ratio is higher than t-table, that was 8.695 > 2.750 with the 2 tail significance p < 0.01 (p = .000).
