"The lack of students competence in mastering the structure pattern, especially\r\nsimple past tense, usually hinders them to communicate about their past\r\nexperience and events in English. Meanwhile, past tense becomes one of\r\nimportant tense that should be mastered by the students of SMP. Therefore, the\r\nresearcher compared two teachings, group work and individual study to\r\ninvestigate the results of applying those two teachings in teaching simple past\r\ntense and to find out which one that would give better result than another.\r\nThis quantitative study reports a research conducted in second year of SMPN 23\r\nBandar Lampung to find out whether there is significant difference of students’\r\nsimple past tense achievement between those taught through group work and\r\nthose taught through individual study. In doing this research, the researcher used\r\nintact group pretest and posttest design. There were two classes used in this\r\nresearch, VIII C was the experimental class 1 taught through group work and VIII\r\nD was the experimental class 2 taught through individual study. The sample was\r\ntaken randomly through lottery. The treatments were administered in three\r\nmeetings to both classes.\r\nThe result showed that there was a significant difference of students’ simple past\r\ntense achievement between those taught through group work and individual study.\r\nIt can be seen from the difference of the students’ mean score. The students’ mean\r\nscore of the experimental class 1 was 57,19 while the mean score of the posttest\r\nwas 79,30. And the mean score of the pretest in the experimental class 2 was 59,\r\n21 while the mean score of the posttest was 64,55. After comparing those results,\r\nit was found that although those teaching could give improvement to the students\r\nbut teaching simple past tense through group work gave better result than\r\nindividual study. Based on the data analysis at the significant level f 0.05, it\r\nproves that the students’ scores were significantly different (p>0.05, p=0.000). So\r\nthat the hypothesis proposed in this research was accepted.
