The students are expected to be able to ask and give information in the acceptable grammar, do a short conversation fluently and accurately describe things, people place or chronological cases in simple words and express felling and opinion. In fact, based on the writer observation during teaching English in SMP Negeri 1 Rajabasa Lampung Selatan, most of students in that school are not able to speak English. The objective of the study is to find out whether teaching speaking using drill technique improves students’ motivation significantly in their speaking class. This research was conducted from the consideration that the problem of the students are not have good knowledge and teaching speaking monotonous of the first year students of SMPN I Rajabasa, Lampung Selatan. The subject of the research was the students of class VII A in the academic year 2011/2012. This classroom action research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consists of planning, implementation, observation and interpretation, analysis and reflection. The indicators of the research success are if 80% students were actively involved in the learning process, and 80% students can gain score 60 or more in speaking test from each aspect of speaking through drill technique. The result of the research shows that, during the cycle 1, more than 40% students were active during the teaching learning process. When doing test in the number of students who did speaking practice before class, there were 15 students did correctly. There were 16 students (46%) who got score 60 or more. In cycle 2, the total number of students actively involved in teaching learning process improved in the second cycle. There were 86% students participated in each activity during the teaching learning process. There were iii 28 students who did well. There were 28 students who get score 60 or more.
