Forms of symbolic communication is Dekke (goldfish), Mandar Hela (sarung-law of men), Boras (rice), and Ulos Hela (ulos-law of men). The meaning of symbols containing the values of marriage and community life Batak Toba interesting and important to be researched in the middle of a multi-cultural community life and the possibility of differences in public perception of these forms of symbolic communication. This study aimed to describe perceptions of couples understanding on the forms of symbolic communication given to the bride during marriage ceremony. Data were obtained through an informant that is determined by purposive sampling that the sampling technique that adjusted for certain defined criteria based on objective research. The results showed that not all married couples to understand the meaning of these symbolic communication. The couple's first understand the three forms of symbolic communication, there is only one symbol that is less understood this pair. Third-couples understand there are two symbols and two symbols are poorly understood by the couple. Four couples only understand one symbol, two symbols are poorly understood and there are a couple symbols that are not understood. While there were three couples who do not understand all the meaning contained in these four forms of symbolic communication that couples the second, fifth, and sixth. The discussion is carried on the factors associated with differences in perceptions and their implications for the form of symbolic communication in Toba Batak ceremony.
