"Writing in junior high schools is one of the four English skills the students have to\r\nlearn. Teaching writing English in Indonesian junior high schools is not an easy\r\ntask. In academic purposes, the students require not only able to speak but also to\r\nwrite in English. To get excellent achievement in writing, they had to master the\r\nfive aspects such as; content, organization, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics.\r\nMoreover, based on the observation at SMPN 1 Rawajitu Timur, the researcher\r\nfound out that the students’ writing skill was still low, because of the lack of\r\nstudents’ competence in writing sentences especially in grammar and mechanic\r\nand the low used of visual sources. Therefore, this research was aimed to find out\r\nthe significant improvement of students’ writing skill and the aspect of writing\r\nthat improved the most after being taught by using Visual Thinking Strategy at the\r\nfirst grade of SMPN 1 Rawajitu Timur. This research was a quantitative which\r\nused one group pretest-posttest design.\r\nThe subjects of this research were 30 students of class VII B at SMPN 1 Rawajitu\r\nTimur in the academic year 2017/2018. Furthermore, the writing test was used as\r\nthe instrument in this research. Additionally, there were two raters to assess\r\nstudents’ writing achievement in order to fulfill the reliability of the test. With the\r\nregards to construct validity, the students’ writing achievement were measured in\r\nonly five aspects of writing, they are: content, organization, grammar, vocabulary,\r\nand mechanic. Moreover, the materials given were suitable with the curriculum to\r\nfulfill the content validity of the test. Thus, the data were analyzed using repeated\r\nmeasure t-test in which the significance was determined by p<0.05.\r\nThe result of the research showed that, the significant level is 0.002, lower than\r\n0.05. The mean score of posttest (70.5) was higher than the pretest (56.7) and the\r\ngain was 13.8. It means that there was a significant improvement in the students’\r\nwriting achievement after being taught using Visual Thinking Strategy (VTS).\r\nOverall, regarding to the results above, it can be stated that VTS is effective to\r\nimprove students’ writing skill in describing people.\r\nKeywords: VTS, writing, describing people."^^ .
