Buku cerita bergambar berbasis SAS yang belum tersedia di SD Negeri 2 Palapa dan MIMA 7 Labuhan Ratu membuat penulis ingin mengembangkan buku cerita bergambar berbasis metode SAS. Adapun tujuan penelitian yang penulis kembangkan adalah (1) mengukur tingkat kevalidan buku cerita bergambar berbasis SAS (2) mengukur tingkat praktikalitas buku cerita bergambar berbasis metode SAS (3) mengukur efektivitas buku cerita bergambar berbasis metode SAS untuk meningkatkan kemampuan membaca permulaan kelas 1 Sekolah Dasar. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian RnD dengan model pengembangan Borg and Gall. Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah kelas I di SD Negeri 2 Palapa dan MIMA 7 Labuhan Ratu. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah angket, wawancara, dan test yang berupa test Performance. Hasil penelitian adalah (1) produk yang dihasilkan dinilai valid oleh 3 ahli media, 3 ahli bahasa, 3 ahli pembelajaran, uji coba perorangan dan uji coba kelompok kecil, (2) produk dinilai praktis berdasarkan penilaian 12 praktisi yaitu uji praktikalitas dari pendidik diperoleh rata-rata 88 (sangat praktis) dan peserta didik diperoleh ratarata 86 (sangat praktis), (3) produk yang dihasilkan efektif digunakan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan membaca permulaan peserta didik ditunjukkan dengan nilai rata-rata pretes di SD Negeri 2 Palapa sebesar 40 meningkat pada posttest sebesar 83 dengan nilai N-Gain skor 0,72 dan MIMA 7 Labuhan Ratu sebesar 36 meningkat pada posttest sebesar 81 dengan nilai N-Gain skor 0,71. SAS-based picture story books which were not available at SD Negeri 2 Palapa and MIMA 7 Labuhan Ratu made the author want to develop the picture story books to based on the SAS method. The research objectives the researcher developed were (1) to measure the level of validity of SAS-based picture story books (2) to measure the level of practicality of SAS method-based on picture story books (3) to measure the effectiveness of SAS method-based picture story books to improve reading ability at the beginning of grade 1 of elementary school students. This research is RnD research with the Borg and Gall development model. The subjects in this research were grade 1 at SD Negeri 2 Palapa and MIMA 7 Labuhan Ratu Bandar Lampung. The data collection techniques used were questionnaires, interviews, and test in the form of performance test. The results of the research were (1) the resulting product was assessed as valid by 3 media experts, 3 language experts, 3 learning experts, individual trials and small group trials, (2) the product was assessed by practical based on the assessment of 12 practitioners, namely the practicality test from educators obtained an average of 88 (very practical) and students obtained an average of 86 (very practical), (3) the product produced was effectively used to improve students' initial reading skills as indicated by the average pretest score at SD Negeri 2 Palapa of 40 increased in the posttest by 83 with an N-Gain score of 0.72 and MIMA 7 Labuhan Ratu increased by 36 in the posttest by 81 with an N-Gain score of 0.71.
