"Water is a crucial natural resource, and surface water is particularly vulnerable to\r\npollution compared to groundwater, especially with rapid population growth and\r\ndevelopment. Increased industrial activities, particularly from palm oil mills, have\r\nled to significant water pollution issues. The high organic content in wastewater\r\nfrom palm oil mills contributes to the deterioration of water quality in rivers,\r\ncausing problems such as turbidity, decreased dissolved oxygen, and habitat\r\ndestruction.\r\n\r\nThis study aims to develop an effective method for predicting the Biochemical\r\nOxygen Demand (BOD) of palm oil mill effluent (POME) using Artificial Neural\r\nNetworks (ANN). Various ANN models were developed with different input\r\nparameters and activation functions to accurately predict BOD levels. The study\r\ninvolved evaluating several ANN models using parameters such as temperature,\r\npH, electrical conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), and turbidity (TB).\r\nResults indicated that the ANN model with inputs pH, EC, DO, and TB and the\r\nTansig-logsig-tansig activation function provided the best performance, with an\r\nRMSE of 754.1757 and R2 of 0.9852.\r\n\r\nThe ANN training process utilized a two-hidden-layer (5-5-5-1) configuration and\r\n27 activation function variations. The best validation results were obtained with five inputs (Temperature, pH, EC, DO, and TB), achieving an RMSE of 2159 and\r\nan RRMSE of 57.03%. These findings highlight that the development of sensor\r\nand electronic technologies can enhance the efficiency and accuracy of\r\nwastewater quality monitoring and offer practical solutions for managing palm oil\r\nmill effluent.\r\n\r\nKeywords : Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME), Biochemical Oxygen Demand\r\n(BOD), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Water pollution, Wastewater\r\ntreatment.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAir merupakan sumber daya alam yang krusial, dan pencemaran air permukaan\r\nmenjadi isu signifikan dibandingkan air tanah, terutama dengan pertumbuhan\r\npopulasi dan pembangunan yang pesat. Peningkatan kegiatan industri, terutama\r\ndari pabrik kelapa sawit, menyebabkan pencemaran air yang serius. Limbah cair\r\ndari pabrik kelapa sawit, yang mengandung bahan organik tinggi, berkontribusi\r\nterhadap penurunan kualitas air di sungai, mengakibatkan masalah lingkungan\r\nseperti kekeruhan, penurunan oksigen terlarut, dan kerusakan habitat.\r\n\r\nPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan metode yang efektif dalam\r\nmemprediksi kadar Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) dari limbah cair kelapa\r\nsawit menggunakan Jaringan Saraf Tiruan (JST). Model JST dikembangkan\r\ndengan berbagai variasi input dan fungsi aktivasi untuk memprediksi kadar BOD\r\nsecara akurat. Penelitian ini melibatkan evaluasi beberapa model JST dengan\r\nmenggunakan parameter suhu, pH, konduktivitas listrik (EC), oksigen terlarut\r\n(DO), dan kekeruhan (TB). Hasil menunjukkan bahwa model JST dengan input\r\npH, EC, DO, dan TB serta fungsi aktivasi Tansig-logsig-tansig menghasilkan nilai\r\nRMSE terbaik sebesar 754,1757 dan R2 sebesar 0,9852.\r\nProses pelatihan JST menggunakan dua lapisan tersembunyi (5-5-5-1) dan 27\r\nvarian aktivasi, menunjukkan bahwa model dengan lima input (Suhu, pH, EC,\r\nDO, dan TB) memberikan hasil validasi terbaik dengan RMSE sebesar 2159 dan\r\nRRMSE sebesar 57,03%.
