abstract: Background: Self-medication is widely practiced throughout the world, including
in hypertensive patients using OTC drugs or traditional medicine The use of OTC
drugs and herbal medicines in self-medication behavior can potentially cause side
effects and drug interactions. This study aims to describe self-medication patterns
and analyze the factors that influence self-medication behavior in hypertensive
patients at the Kedaton City Health Center, Bandar Lampung.
Method: This research is a cross-sectional approach with a sample size of 141. We
collected primary data from direct interviews with hypertensive patients at the
Kedaton Public Health Center, Bandar Lampung.
Results: Self-medication behavior in hypertensive patients was 76.8% with the use
of OTC drugs 9.9%, herbal medicine/supplements 31.7%, and a combination of
both 35.2%. In the multivariate analysis, it was discovered that the factor that
influenced self-medication behavior was the level of compliance (p-value=0.016;

OR=2.992). Factors that influence the use of OTC drugs were income (p-
value=0.026; OR=3.512) and level of adherence (p-value=0.039; OR=3.7 and p-
value=0.036; OR=2.4). Factors that influence the use of herbal

medicine/supplements were education level (p-value=0.03; OR=0.198) and level of
adherence (p-value=0.012; OR=7.16).
Conclusion: Many hypertensive patients dominate self-medication practice using
OTC drugs or herbal medicines. The influencing factors were sociodemographics
including education level and income, as well as medication adherence. Therefore,
education for hypertensive patients regarding the use of OTC drugs and herbal
medicines/supplements is needed.

Latar Belakang: Swamedikasi banyak dilakukan di seluruh dunia, termasuk pada
pasien hipertensi baik penggunaan obat OTC ataupun pengobatan tradisional.
Penggunaan obat OTC dan obat herbal pada perilaku swamedikasi dapat berpotensi
menimbulkan efek samping dan interaksi obat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk
mengetahui gambaran pola swamedikasi serta menganalisis faktor yang
mempengaruhi perilaku swamedikasi pada pasien hipertensi di Puskesmas Kota
Kedaton Bandar Lampung.
Metode: Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian dengan pendekatan cross-sectional
dengan jumlah sampel 141. Data merupakan data primer hasil wawancara langsung
pada pasien hipertensi di Puskesmas Kedaton Kota Bandar Lampung.
Hasil: Perilaku swamedikasi pada pasien hipertensi yaitu sebanyak 76.8% dengan
penggunaan obat OTC 9,9%, jamu/suplemen 31,7%, dan gabungan keduanya
35,2%. Pada analisis multivariat diketahui faktor yang berpengaruh pada perilaku
swamedikasi adalah tingkat kepatuhan (p-value=0,016; OR=2,992). Faktor yang
mempengaruhi penggunaan obat OTC adalah pendapatan (p-value=0,026;
OR=3,512) dan tingkat kepatuhan (p-value=0,039; OR=3,7 dan p-value=0,036;
OR=2,4). Faktor yang mempengaruhi penggunaan jamu/suplemen adalah
pendidikan (p-value=0,03; OR=0,198) dan tingkat kepatuhan (p-value=0,012;
OR=7,16).
Kesimpulan: Banyak pasien hipertensi yang melakukan swamedikasi
menggunakan obat OTC maupun jamu/herbal. Faktor yang berpengaruh yaitu
sosiodemografi meliputi pendidikan dan pendapatan, serta kepatuhan minum obat.
Oleh karena itu, perlu adanya pemberian edukasi bagi pasien hipertensi dalam
penggunaan obat OTC serta jamu/suplemen yang aman.
