abstract: Tinnitus is generally defined as the perception of sound experienced by the patient
without any external auditory stimulus. The severity of tinnitus may be influenced
by the use of earphones, as excessive patterns of earphone use can exacerbate the
severity of tinnitus symptoms. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship
between the frequency, duration, volume, length of use, and usage patterns of
earphones with the incidence of tinnitus among students of the Faculty of Medicine,
University of Lampung. This cross-sectional study was conducted from December
2024 to March 2025 at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lampung. A total of
103 students were selected using cluster sampling based on academic year cohorts.
The data were obtained from questionnaires distributed to students and
subsequently analyzed using univariate analysis in the form of percentages and
bivariate analysis employing the chi-square test. The results of this study
demonstrated a significant association (p<0.05) between the frequency, duration,
volume, length of use, and usage patterns of earphones with the risk of tinnitus.

Tinnitus secara umum dapat didefinisikan sebagai persepsi bunyi yang diterima
oleh telinga penderita tanpa adanya rangsangan bunyi dari luar. Tingkat keparahan
tinnitus dapat dipengaruhi akibat penggunaan earphone, pola penggunaan
earphone yang berlebihan dapat meningkatkan tingkat keparahan tinnitus yang
dirasakan oleh penderita tinnitus. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk
mengetahui hubungan antara frekuensi, durasi, volume, lama, dan pola penggunaan
earphone dengan kejadian tinnitus pada mahasiswa Fakultas Kedokteran
Universitas Lampung. Studi berdesain cross sectional dilakukan pada bulan
Desember 2024 – Maret 2025 di Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Lampung.
Sampel berjumlah 103 mahasiswa yang diperoleh menggunakan cluster sampling
berdasarkan angkatan. Data didapatkan dari kuesioner yang diberikan kepada para
mahasiswa, lalu kemudian dianalisis secara univariat dengan persentase dan
bivariat menggunakan chi-square. Hasil dari studi ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat
hubungan yang signifikan (p<0,05) antara frekuensi, durasi, volume, lama, dan pola
penggunaan earphone dengan risiko tinnitus.
