LEARNING AND COMMUNITY LANGUAGE LEARNING METHOD
TOWARDS SPEAKING ACHIEVEMENT OF THE FIRST YEAR
STUDENTS AT SMA 1 NATARThis research was conducted to respond the research problem “Is there any significant
difference of students’ speaking ability between the students who are taught using
Contextual Teaching and Learning method and those taught using Community Language
Learning method?”. There were many factors that influenced students’ problems in
speaking achievement. One of them was the unsuitable method used by teacher.
Therefore, this research was intended to investigate whether there was a significant
difference in students’ achievement of speaking ability between those who were taught
through Contextual Teaching and Learning and those taught through Community
Language Learning.
This research was quantitative by nature and was conducted at SMA 1 Natar, Lampung
Selatan. The participants of this research were two classes at the first year. One classes as
the experimental class 1and the others as the experimental class 2. The experimental class
1 was taught using Contextual Teaching and Learning and the experimental class 2 was
taught using Community Language Learning method. A pretest-posttest control group
design was applied. The data collected were analyzed using Independent T-Test with
statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 13.0 to compare the data average
scores of both groups.
Based on the calculation of T-test, the result showed that the students’ average score of
posttest in experimental class1 was higher than in the experimental class 2 (70.00 >
65.00) with the gain score of 5.00. The results of the T-test indicated that the significant
(2-tailed) value was 0.000 (p=0.000, p < 0.05). it showed that the hypothesis was
accepted that is, There is significant difference of students’ speaking achievement
between the students who are taught through Contextual Teaching and Learning method
and those who are taught by Community Language Learning method. Thus, it is
concluded that Contextual Teaching and Learning can be applied to help the students at
SMA level to improve their speaking ability and recommended as a references to teach
English in speaking class.
Furthermore, it is better for the teacher to apply some methods that more attractive to the
students. Given that Contextual Teaching and Learning is one of the way that has been
proved as the method that can be used in the teaching speaking. It can be used to
encourage students to speak. For students who are introvert (lack of speak), teacher
should give them more attention and encouragement to speak so that they will get
involved in the communicative situation.Dwika Permata Sari 0513042003.
