Abstract
This study aims to identify and analyze the types and functions of directive illocutionary acts found in the film Under Paris directed by Xavier Gens. This research employs a pragmatic approach using Ibrahim’s (1993) classification of directive speech acts. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. The data consist of utterances containing directive illocutionary acts taken from the film dialogues. The data were collected through observation, documentation, and note-taking techniques, and analyzed by identifying, classifying, and interpreting the utterances using Dell Hymes’ SPEAKING model. The results show that there are six types of directive illocutionary acts found in the film, namely requestives (16 data), questions (17 data), requirements (49 data), prohibitives (11 data), permissives (2 data), and advisories (4 data), with a total of 99 data. The most dominant type is requirements, indicating that the interactions in the film are largely influenced by crisis situations that require quick responses and clear instructions. This study reveals that the realization of directive speech acts varies depending on the situational context, social relations between participants, and the level of urgency. This research is expected to contribute to the study of pragmatics and support French language learning, especially in understanding the pragmatic functions of utterances in real communication contexts. Keywords: directive acts, illocutionary acts, speech acts
