Abstrak

Reading is very important, because the readers can understand what the text tells about. The students need to read the text first before they start translating the text. Translation also important, because translation is ultimately a human activity which enables human beings to exchange ideas and thoughts regardless of the different language used. The concrete problem between reading and translating that often happens can be seen in the teaching and learning process. When the students do not read the text better, they will get difficulties in translating. This research concerns with the correlation between students translation ability with their reading comprehension at the first grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Trimurjo. This research is quantitative by nature using ex-post facto design. The sample was chosen by using simple probability random sampling. Class X MIA3 was chosen as the sample class and class X MIA2 was chosen as the try out class. The data were collected by administering translation and reading comprehension test. There were no treatments conducted in the sample class. The data analyzed by using Statiscal Packaged for Social Science (SPSS) version 16.0. The test result showed that coefficient correlation of students’ translation and their reading comprehension is 0.724 at the significant level of 0.01. It means that those variables positively correlated. The correlation coefficient (rvalue) is higher than r table (0.724 > .393). Here, the H0 was proved rvalue < r table. Therefore H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. It means that there is significant correlation between students’ translation ability and their reading comprehension.
