Abstrak (Berisi Bastraknya saja, Judul dan Nama Tidak Boleh di Masukan)

This research was conducted in order to find out how role play was implemented in speaking class and what problems found during the implementation of role play at the second grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Bandar Lampung. The subjects of the research were three classes of the second grade; they were XI IPS 1, XI IPA 1, and XI IPA 2 of SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Bandar Lampung in academic year 2014/2015. This research was descriptive qualitative research which was done in one time meeting for each class. The data were collected by observation, questionnaire of interview, and supported by video recording as an authentic proof. The result of the research showed that role play was implemented by the English teachers of with four main steps in teaching learning speaking through role play. They were introducing the students to the target speech function, encouraging the students to practice pronouncing dialog consist of the target speech function, encouraging the students to discuss and practice their own dialog with their partner, and encouraging the students to perform their dialog (role playing) in front of the class. The problems occurred during the implementation of role play were class control in XI IPS 1 and XI IPA 2, time consuming, and large gap between superior and inferior students in XI IPS 1. Role play can be used as one of techniques in teaching speaking in order to encourage students to practice speaking. The teacher should apply techniques in classroom management to keep the class focus on the topic. The teachers and the students also should work together to overcome students inferiority thus they can participate more in classroom speaking practice.
