Abstrak (Berisi Bastraknya saja, Judul dan Nama Tidak Boleh di Masukan)

A vocabulary is very important for students to master the language. By using mnemonic story technique, students are led to associate the vocabularies they have already preserved in their memory to the vocabularies in the new text, namely story. It is memory strategy that helps students to remember information. From the researcher’s experience as the English teacher at SMP Karya Bhakti Gadingrejo, it was revealed that the students could not do reading exercise well because they had lacked of vocabulary. Most of them got difficulties in understanding the content of the text. Therefore, the researcher has conducted mnemonic story technique to increase students’ vocabulary achievement especially in noun, verb, and adjective, to improve the students’ participation as well as the quality of teacher’s teaching performance. The subject of the research was class VIII A consisting of 30 students. This classroom action research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, action, observation and interpretation, analysis and reflection. The researcher used indicators dealing with learning product which covered the students’ score and learning process which covered the students’ participation and the teacher’s teaching performance. To collect the data of learning process and learning product, the researcher used vocabulary test and observation as the instruments. The result of Cycle 1 shows that only 12 students (39.99%) got score ≥60. Meanwhile, after Cycle 2 had been conducted, there are 29 students (96.66%) who passed the KKM. For the learning process, that is, the students’ participation during the teaching learning process, in Cycle 1, there are 17 students (59.66%) got score ≥80% and there are 29 students (96.66%) who scored ≥80% in Cycle 2. Meanwhile, for the teacher’s teaching performance, the teacher achieved score 62 in Cycle 1, and achieved score 82 in Cycle 2. Referring to the result of the research, it could be concluded that Mnemonic story technique is applicable to increase the students’ vocabulary mastery, and improve the students’ participation during the teaching learning process as well as the teacher’s teaching performance.
