Abstrak

Reading comprehension enables readers to draw inferences from words and expressions stated in a text. In relation to teaching reading comprehension, the concept of conceptual learning offered in the learning process becomes an interesting part to be discussed. However, there is no further discussion of how conceptual learning is widely applied in teaching reading comprehension. In relation to this issue, the present study attempts to find out the difference between teaching reading comprehension taught through conventional learning and conceptual learning. Involving two classes, control and experimental classes consisting of each 36 students of the 11th grade of SMAN 5 Bandar Lampung, tryout test, pre-test, and post test were conducted to find out the students’ score of reading comprehension. Meanwhile, in order to find out the students’ perception on conceptual learning, a set of 40 items in questionnaire was also administered. The collected data result in findings that 1) There is a significant increase in students’ score of reading comprehension taught through conceptual learning, particularly in making inference aspect, 23.29%.; 2) Students’ perception on conceptual learning shows 61.1% students agree that conceptual learning has given good perception. However, the effect of teaching reading comprehension through conceptual learning on students’ critical thinking skill was not really given careful attention due to limitations of the study. Therefore, this study might be the window for further studies to explore and to be focused on specific analysis of the effects of teaching reading comprehension on students’ critical thinking skill.
