Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh rendahnya kemampuan pemahaman matematis peserta didik, terutama di kelas IV SDN 8 Metro Timur, yang disebabkan oleh penggunaan metode pembelajaran yang cenderung konvensional dan kurang kontekstual. Kurangnya keterlibatan aktif peserta didik dalam proses belajar membuat materi matematika terasa sulit dan membosankan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji pengaruh pendekatan Pendidikan Matematika Realistik terhadap kemampuan pemahaman matematis peserta didik. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan adalah kuantitatif dengan metode eksperimen semu. Desain penelitian yang diterapkan adalah nonequivalent control group design. Populasi penelitian adalah seluruh peserta didik kelas IV SDN 8 Metro Timur, dengan dua kelas sebagai sampel, yaitu kelas IV A sebagai kelas eksperimen dan kelas IV B sebagai kelas kontrol. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan instrumen tes dan non-tes, berupa 10 soal uraian serta observasi dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pendekatan Pendidikan Matematika Realistik berpengaruh secara signifikan terhadap kemampuan pemahaman matematis peserta didik. Pendekatan ini terbukti lebih efektif dibandingkan pembelajaran konvensional, karena mendorong peserta didik untuk memahami konsep matematika melalui konteks nyata yang dekat dengan kehidupan mereka, serta meningkatkan partisipasi aktif dalam proses belajar. Kata kunci: matematika sd, pemahaman matematis, pendekatan realistik This study was motivated by the low level of mathematical understanding among fourth-grade students at SDN 8 Metro Timur, which was attributed to the use of conventional and less contextual teaching methods. The lack of active student involvement in the learning process often made mathematics feel difficult and uninteresting. This research aimed to examine the effect of the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach on students’ mathematical understanding. The type of research used was quantitative with a quasi-experimental method. The research design implemented was a nonequivalent control group design. The population consisted of all fourth-grade students at SDN 8 Metro Timur, with two classes selected as the sample—one as the experimental group and the other as the control group. Data collection techniques included both test and non-test instruments, comprising essay-type questions, observations, and documentation. The results of the study indicated that the Realistic Mathematics Education approach had a significant effect on students’ mathematical understanding. This approach proved to be more effective than conventional teaching, as it encouraged students to grasp mathematical concepts through real-life contexts and increased their active participation during lessons.
