Abstract
The “Indonesia Gelap” phenomenon and the #KaburAjaDulu narrative reflects the accumulation of youth anxieties over social inequality, limited opportunities for growth, and a declining trust in national systems. One prominent articulation of this discourse appears in Raymond Chin’s YouTube podcast episode “Kabur Aja Dulu, Indonesia Gelap,” which has reached over 1.1 million views. This study aims to analyze how students from diverse social backgrounds interpret issues of nationalism, social justice, and Indonesia’s future through this content, as well as to identify the factors shaping their interpretations. The research employs a qualitative approach using critical reception analysis, integrating Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding model within a cultural studies framework. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with ten students from various regions in Indonesia, including two diaspora informants studying in Egypt and Turkey. The findings reveal that student interpretations are active and heterogeneous, categorized into three decoding positions: dominant, negotiated, and oppositional. The dominant position is found among informants with direct experiences of structural inequality, where the podcast narrative confirms their lived realities. The negotiated position emerges among students exposed to diverse discussion spaces and academic backgrounds that encourage multiperspective thinking. Meanwhile, the oppositional position is rooted in ideological frameworks that critically challenge conventional notions of nationalism. These differing interpretations are shaped by three interrelated factors: frameworks of knowledge, relations of production, and technical infrastructure. This study concludes that students’ nationalism is transforming from territorial attachment into a critical consciousness oriented toward contributing to Indonesia, both domestically and globally. Keywords: reception analysis, Indonesia Gelap, KaburAjaDulu, digital media, young generation.
