The role of agricultural extension workers has a big influence in the development of farmer groups. Farmer group development leads to developing business capital within the group, increasing human resources within the group and providing facilities and infrastructure within the farmer group. The aim of the research is to identify the role of extension workers in developing farmer groups, the influence of distance to the usual area and the obstacles faced by agricultural extension workers. The role of extension workers in developing farmer groups consists of five roles, namely as facilitator, innovator, motivator, communicator and educator. This research used a qualitative descriptive method involving 17 informants who came from farmer group leaders and agricultural extension coordinators and agricultural instructors in Margototo Village. The information that has been collected is processed using the help of NVivo software. The research results show that instructors play less of a role in developing groups. Based on this role, extension workers are still less focused on developing farmer groups but more on increasing agricultural production results. The obstacles faced by agricultural instructors influence the development of farmer groups. These obstacles include the large number of farmer groups in the target area of Margtoto Village, totaling 58 farmer groups, the lack of farmer participation in any extension activities and the large distance between the target area and the domicile of one of the extension worker. Keywords: The role of extension workers, Constraints, Farmer groups Peran penyuluh pertanian berpengaruh besar dalam pengembangan kelompok tani. Pengembangan kelompok tani mengarah kepada pengembangan modal usaha di dalam kelompok, peningkatan sumber daya manusia di dalam kelompok dan penyediaan sarana dan prasarana di dalam kelompok tani. Tujuan penelitian adalah mengidentifikasi bagaimana peran penyuluh dalam mengembangkan kelompok tani, pengaruh jarak wilayah biaan dan kendala-kendala yang dihadapi penyuluh pertanian. Peran penyuluh dalam pengembangan kelompok tani terdiri dari lima peran yitu sebagai fasilitator, innovator, motivator, komunikator, dan edukator. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan melibatkan 17 informan yang berasal dari ketua kelompok tani dan coordinator penyuluh pertanian serta penyuluh pertanian Desa Margototo. Informasi yang telah terkumpul diolah menggunakan bantuan software NVivo. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa penyuluh kurang berperan dalam mengembangkan kelompok. Berdasarkan perannya tersebut penyuluh masih kurang terpacu pada pengembangan kelompok tani melainkan lebih kepada peningkatan hasil produksi usahatani sehingga. Kendala yang dihadapi penyuluh pertanian berpengaruh terhadap pengembangan kelompok tani. Kendala tersebut diantaranya yaitu banyaknya kelompok tani di wilayah binaan Desa Margtoto yang berjumlah 58 kelompok tani, kurangnya partisipasi petani dalam setiap kegiatan penyuluhan dan adanya jarak wilayah yang cukup jauh antara wilayah binaan dengan domisili salah satu penyuluh.
