Penelitian ini mengkaji pemaknaan sosial kopi dalam masyarakat Pekon Balak serta peran Ngupi Pai dalam membentuk identitas sosial. Ngupi Pai dipahami sebagai praktik sosial yang mempererat hubungan antaranggota masyarakat. Bagi masyarakat yang mayoritas berprofesi sebagai petani kopi, kopi dimaknai sebagai warisan leluhur, penopang ekonomi, serta simbol solidaritas dan kebanggaan lokal. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik pengumpulan data melalui observasi, wawancara mendalam, dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kopi memiliki pemaknaan yang beragam, antara lain sebagai sumber semangat dan ketenangan batin dan pembentuk solidaritas. Fanatisme terhadap kopi lokal melahirkan distingsi positif, seperti penolakan terhadap kopi instan dan kebiasaan membawa kopi hasil panen sendiri saat bepergian. Ngupi Pai berperan penting dalam pembentukan identitas sosial melalui proses kategorisasi, identifikasi, dan perbandingan sosial yang menanamkan nilai kekeluargaan dan solidaritas dalam masyarakat Pekon Balak, Kabupaten Lampung Barat. Melalui perspektif teori Identitas Sosial dari Tajfel dan Turner serta dikembangkan oleh Hogg dan Abrams, temuan penelitian diidentifikasi melalui proses kategorisasi, identifikasi, dan perbandingan sosial yang sarat akan dimensi emosional. Perspektif ini menjelaskan bagaimana Ngupi Pai membangun rasa memiliki (sense of belonging) dan loyalitas kelompok yang kuat dalam membentuk identitas sosial masyarakat Pekon Balak. Kata Kunci: Kopi, budaya, masyarakat, lokal, identitas sosial This study examines the social meaning of coffee in the Pekon Balak community and the role of Ngupi Pai in shaping social identity. Ngupi Pai is understood as a social practice that strengthens relationships among community members. For the community, the majority of whom work as coffee farmers, coffee is interpreted as an ancestral heritage, an economic support, and a symbol of solidarity and local pride. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results show that coffee has various meanings, including as a source of enthusiasm and inner peace and a builder of solidarity. Fanaticism for local coffee gives rise to positive distinctions, such as the rejection of instant coffee and the habit of bringing homegrown coffee when traveling. Ngupi Pai plays an important role in the formation of social identity through the processes of categorization, identification, and social comparison that instill values of kinship and solidarity in the Pekon Balak community, West Lampung Regency. Through the perspective of the Social Identity theory by Tajfel and Turner and developed by Hogg and Abrams, the research findings are identified through the processes of categorization, identification, and social comparison that are rich in emotional dimensions. This perspective explains how Ngupi Pai builds a strong sense of belonging and group loyalty in shaping the social identity of the Pekon Balak community.
