Abstrak

Vocabulary is a very important part in learning language. Learning language means learning is vocabulary, it means that vocabulary takes an important part in language I which the vocabulary will make a language meaningful. Some Elementary School students feel afraid and nervous in learning English. One of the reasons is English as the first foreign language is rarely used in their life. Inappropriate technique used by the teacher is also the cause of students’ difficulty in learning English. Song is one of the techniques that can help students to study naturally. The objective of the research is to find out whether song can increase students’ vocabulary achievement. The hypothesis of the research is there was significant increase of students’ vocabulary achievement after being taught through song. The research was conducted at the fifth year of SDN 2 Rulung Helok. In first semester of the study period 2010/2011. The researcher used two classes, one class as an experimental class (VA) and another class as a try out class (VB) those classes were chosen by lottery in average, and there are about 35 students in one class. One group pretest posttest design was employed. The data of this quantitative research were developed by comparing the result of pretest and posttest. The result showed that the average score of posttest is higher than pretest. The average score of pretest is 54,95, but it increased 71,65 in the posttest. It shows that the students’ average score of vocabulary achievement has increased 11,7 points. It indicates that the hypothesis of the research is proved. By observing the activity in the class, it was found out that the students were more enthusiastic in song technique. In teaching vocabulary through song, the students’ vocabulary achievement increased. The statements were approved by evidence on the gains score and computation of test.
