Abstrak (Berisi Bastraknya saja, Judul dan Nama Tidak Boleh di Masukan)

Writing is an activity that uses brain, eyes and hand; it is a way to express ideas, thoughts and feelings by using conventional symbols. However, in English Language Teaching, the majority of students often feel frustrated when their English teacher asks them to compose a piece of writing because they do not know how to put their ideas into words. Therefore, the objective of this research was to find out whether teaching using realia can develop students’ descriptive text writing ability at the second year of SMPN 2 Bandar Mataram. The quantitative data (students’ score) was used to see the students’ ability in writing descriptive text (learning product). The subjects of the research were the students of class VIII.A in the academic year 2012/2013. Pretest and post test experimental design was used in this research. Pre-test and post-test were administered to measure the students’ ability in writing descriptive text before and after treatments. The scoring system was based on five aspects; they are content 20%, organization 20%, vocabulary 20%, grammar 20% and mechanic 20%. The scores of the five aspects from the pretest to post test can be reported as follow. In terms of content, the score increased from 11.72 to 16.7, organization from 7.35 to 11.8, vocabulary from 11.02 to 15.75, grammar from 8.25 to 11.52 and mechanic from 5.42 to 9.92. The average score of pre-test is 44.22 and up to 65.15 in the post-test. The data analysis shows that t-value (10.886) is higher than t-table (2.861). It means that the hyphothesis was analyzed at significant level. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is an increase of students’ ability in writing descriptive text after treatments using realia as media.
