Abstrak

Basically, writing is considered as the most difficult skill to master. The previous studies found that students mostly had three serious problems in writing. The first problem was that many students could not express their idea into written form coherently because they were confuse how to link sentence and did not know how to employ variety of transitional signals. It means that the students’ writing ability is low in term of organization. The second problem was that students often did errors of agreement, preposition, and tense so that it indicated that students’ writing ability is weak in term of grammar. At last, the problem mostly faced by the students was that they often confuse to express their idea into appropriate words which is relevant to the topic. It points out that students writing ability is still low in term of vocabulary. Due to the problem stated above, this study was designed to investigate the effect of outlining strategy in improving students’ recount text writing ability in term of organization, grammar, and vocabulary. One group pre-test post-test design was used in this study. The population of the research was the students of the second grade of SMPN 13 Bandar Lampung in the academic year of 2011/2012. Class of VIIIG was taken as the sample in which it consisted of 30 students. The result of the study showed that there is a significant improvement of students’ writing ability in term of organization, grammar, and vocabulary with the values of two tailed significance are smaller than 0.05. The finding reveals that outlining strategy gives a possitive effect on the students’ recount text writing ability particularly in term of organization since it is an organizational strategy which leads the students to express their ideas in logical order.
