The purposes of this research are to analyze: (1) the roles of agricultural extension workers diffusion of rice cultivation innovation using System of Rice Intensification (SRI) method, and (2) factors related to the speed of the diffusion. This research was conducted in Talang Padang sub-district, Tanggamus in April until June 2013. The location was selected purposively with a consideration that the sub-district is one of good quality rice producers. This research is a survey method and respondents were sixty seven farmers randomly chosen from five hundred twenty one farmers who applied the SRI method of rice cultivation. Data were analyzed using descriptive and non-parametric statistical analysis of Kendall taub. The results of this research showed that (1) the roles of agricultural extension workers on SRI method diffusion was categorized as good. It included education task, dissemination of the innovation, facilitative activity, consultative activity, supervision, monitoring, and evaluation, (2) factors related to the rate of diffusion of innovation of the SRI method of rice cultivation in Talang Padang sub-district are the roles of agricultural extension workers and characteristics of the innovation. Key words: diffusion of innovation, SRI method, role, agricultural extension workers Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui: (1) tingkat peranan penyuluh pertanian lapangan dalam difusi inovasi budidaya padi metode S.R.I, (2) faktor-faktor yang berhubungan dengan kecepatan difusi inovasi budidaya padi metode S.R.I. Penelitian dilakukan di Kecamatan Talang Padang, Kabupaten Tanggamus. Lokasi penelitian dipilih secara sengaja (purposive) dengan pertimbangan, bahwa di Kecamatan Talang Padang ini merupakan salah satu penghasil beras yang cukup baik kualitasnya dibandingkan kecamatan lain yang terdapat di Kabupaten Tanggamus. Penentuan pengambilan sampel menggunakan metode acak sederhana (simple random sampling) dan diperoleh sebanyak 67 orang petani yang menerapkan budidaya padi metode S.R.I dari total 521 orang petani. Penelitian dilakukan dari bulan April sampai dengan Juni 2013. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode survei. Analisis data dilakukan secara deskriptif dan menggunakan analisis statistik non parametrik Kendall tau_b. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan (1) tingkat peranan penyuluh pertanian lapangan dalam difusi inovasi budidaya padi metode S.R.I sudah baik, meliputi peranan penyuluh pertanian lapangan dalam melakukan edukasi, diseminasi informasi/inovasi, fasilitasi, konsultasi, supervisi, pemantauan, serta dalam melakukan evaluasi, dan (2) faktor-faktor yang berhubungan dengan tingkat kecepatan difusi inovasi budidaya padi metode S.R.I di Kecamatan Talang Padang Kabupaten Tanggamus ini adalah tingkat peranan penyuluh pertanian lapangan (PPL), dan sifat-sifat inovasi.
