Abstract

Skimming technique is an effective reading technique used to make inference and to find out the main idea, the tone and the organization of a text. Skimming technique was implemented in the research as the problem of the students in reading was the lack of awareness in reading and lack of strategy in doing reading test, especially in finding main ideas and making inferences. Therefore, training students to master skimming technique seems to fit to be implemented in this research. The aim of this research is to improve students’ reading comprehension through the implementation of skimming technique, increase students’ participation in the lesson and improve teacher’s teaching performance. The subject of this research is the students at class VIII D of SMPN 2 Sukoharjo, Pringsewu. The research, which consists of 2 cycles, lasted from February 18, 2012 to February 25, 2012. A classroom action research is carried out in order to improve students’ reading comprehension after using skimming technique in reading class. The result of the research proves that skimming technique can be used to improve students’ reading comprehension. The indicators of the research are concerned on the learning product and learning process. The indicator of the learning product is 80% of the students pass the passing grade which is 75 while the learning process is 80% of the students are active during the lesson. In the first cycle, there were only 31.8% of the students who passed the passing grade and 46% of the students who were active in the lesson. The rest of the students were still unable to use the technique so that they could not participate more in the lesson. In the second cycle after students were given individual treatment based on their pace in understanding the technique and answering reading test, both of the indicators of this research were achieved. In students’ reading score, 81.5% students passed the passing grade and 85% of students actively involved in teaching and learning process. Based on the data, the researcher concludes that there is an improvement of the students’ reading comprehension after skimming technque is implemented. Therefore, skimming technique is recommended to be used by teachers to improve their students’ reading comprehension in English.
